Abstract
Publishing a book according to the readersâ demand is the major precondition towards success for any publishing house. Acquisition of proper manuscript and ensuring the quality of editing increases the demand of a book, enhances its readability and achieves the readersâ satisfaction. This research investigates the acquisition and editing processes of creative books in Bangladesh. Considering the creative publishing houses, who had taken part in Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2024, as population; 30 publishing houses were chosen through purposive sampling for this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the publishers and editors of the publishing houses to collect data for this mixed method research. Besides, 30 sample books were collected from those publishers to analyse the content and editing of the books. The Kipling Method, 4-A theory, PPOSTA Theory and theories of Readability draw the theoretical framework of this study. The analysis shows the current scenario of acquisition and editing process including the strength, weakness and development plans of the creative book publishers in Bangladesh. The study demonstrates the absence of structured process of manuscript acquisition, selection and editing. Market research is unheeded and sometimes the publisherâs call is the final decision alone to publish a book. The presence of complete editing department, proper guideline for acquisition and editing, and the number of permanent editors and proof readers are minimal. Comprehensively, the study finds an unstructured and frail scenario of book acquisition and editing in creative book publishing. This research proposes a model named âMASAEPA modelâ which may provide a proper guideline and structured process for book acquisition and editing in creative publishing industry of Bangladesh.
